IEC 61058-1:2026 Published: What the New Edition of the Appliance Switch Standard Means for OEMs

2026-08-31 · Industry News

On 30 July 2026, the International Electrotechnical Commission published IEC 61058-1:2026 — "Switches for appliances – Part 1: General requirements" — as the fifth edition, cancelling and replacing the fourth edition (2016) as a full technical revision, per the official publication page on the IEC Webstore. The standard, maintained by TC 23/SC 23J (Switches for appliances), applies to switches with a rated voltage up to 600 V and a rated current up to 63 A.

Key technical changes in the fifth edition

Per the official IEC publication summary, the 2026 edition introduces the following significant changes:

  • Scope extended to 600 V — wider voltage coverage for appliance switches;
  • New ground-fuse requirements (Clause 17);
  • DC arc extinction testing (Annex P and Clause 17) — directly relevant to DC-rated switches such as the 30 A DC switches used in cordless tools;
  • Table 5 re-arranged to align with classifications;
  • Table 6 corrected for inhomogeneous values;
  • Deletion of X3 capacitors from the classification and Table 19.

What this means for OEMs and buyers

For manufacturers and OEM buyers of appliance and power-tool switches, a new edition signals a transition period: new certifications are validated against the new edition, while existing certificates continue to be evaluated against the version under which they were issued. The stability date for IEC 61058-1:2026 is 2029, indicating a multi-year horizon before further revision.

How DKLD is responding

DKLD Dongke Electric's switch ranges — including the DZ04, DZ-6 and JT02 30 A DC series — are certified under the EN 61058 / UL 61058 framework (TÜV/CE and UL 61058). DKLD is monitoring the fifth edition and validating its product range against the new requirements, with particular attention to the new DC arc extinction provisions given our 30 A DC cordless-tool switches. See our Certificate Library for current certificates, and our technical guides on UL 61058 vs EN 61058 and cordless-tool DC switches for background on how these standards apply.
